LEXINGTON, Ky. – A common business strategy is to find an untapped demographic and then serve that market.
That’s exactly what Sara Wood, the owner of GirlsGirlsGirls Burritos, did. Wood teamed up with Team Cornett: Advertising Agency to create a restaurant exclusively for squirrels on the University of Kentucky’s campus.
Wood dubbed it SquirrelsSquirrelsSquirrels Burritos.
“We made a mini version of our shop and then we did the full process,” said Wood. “We cooked food for the squirrels.”
Wood picked squirrels over all the other critters that roam Lexington because of the personality and flair the squirrels have a reputation for.
“They are always playing around with our compost,” said Wood. “They hang out on our patio and have so much personality and just run the campus. I think that’s another reason why people were endeared to it because we all have our relationships with the squirrels here.”
SquirrelsSquirrelsSquirrels Burritos was open for a short time but Wood plans for it to make a return to UK once school is back in session for the spring semester.
In the meantime, if you wanted to check out SquirrelsSquirrelsSquirrels Burritos it is inside GirlsGirlsGirls Burritos. The small storefront rests right next to a donation jar that benefits the Lexington Humane Society.
Wood thinks the fun traction it has gained on social media can remind folks of an important message.
“We like to use any opportunity we can to raise awareness and kindness to animals,” said Wood. “We share the environment with them.”
She feels blessed that so many have reacted to the second store with laughs and smiles.
“We all have that shared sense of humor and it just makes me feel super connected to my community and to my patrons and that is such a treat,” she said. “I mean if any business owner can be so lucky.”
