Police: Witness disarmed Western High School student who tried to stab security guard

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A Western High School student is in custody after injuring a school security guard with a knife.

A witness told police 18-year-old Jeffeon Shelby was being “disrespectful and wasn’t going to class” at around 1:30 p.m. Feb. 5. Security guard Maurice Grinter approached Shelby, who then pulled out a knife.

The altercation turned physical. A separate witness said he saw Shelby try to stab Grinter in the back. The witness said he grabbed the knife from Shelby, who was then removed and taken to a separate room.

Grinter’s injuries were minor, and he was not transported the hospital. Shelby was charged with assault in the third degree and unlawful possession of a weapon on school property.

Shively Police along with JCPS Security are investigating. JCPS said the student would be disciplined.
